Nature of the Claim
I suppose I should be amused. Growing up, my family was what I like to call struggling middle class-We were middle class in our lifestyle, yet were only a few steps away from needing food stamps or other aids (I think at one point, we actually did use food stamps). We were always the last people to get anything, which became a hinderance during the late 90's when school curricula changed to become more computer-centric, and our family was one of the shrinking few who did not yet have a machine. Back when Windows was making the transition from 95 to 98, we got our first model: an old IBM machine running Windows 3.1. It was given to us by our dentist-it used to be his old work machine, but he had recently upgraded, and didn't know what to do with the now hideously outdated model.
We used that machine for many many years. Dad even managed to come across a few shareware games on three-and-a-half floppies, and we somehow came across the legacy roleplaying game Space 1888 (one of theose floppy disk games). Our family began doing a little better after that, and we scored a good-model Windows 95 machine (later upgraded to Windows 98). That was our first cd-rom computer, and I bought a few games of my own, only to discover that not every game worked with the system. I eventually learned not to buy computer games, as the changing times rendered our family machines more and more obsolete.
Today, I have my own Windows XP computer, and Dad has a rickashamble peicemeil unit, also running Windows XP. We enjoy all the latest games, such as Oblivion and Warcraft 3. My Dad, however, seems to want to make up for not being able to afford much for our old computers, because likes to buy cheaper, older games. Recently, he picked up a legacy copy of Menzoberranzan, along with the first Neverwinter Nights game. The great irony is that Menzoberranzan is so old that it flat out won't work on Windows XP. It won't even run in compatability mode, and DOS BOX, the semi-good DOS emulator, can't even run it. After looking up tutorials on how to get it to run, and only finding one, I'm guessing that DOS BOX only recognizes the reprint that Wizards put out with a collection of their legacy games on it. I'm guessing ours is the original 1992 Menzoberranzan cd. It's 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, and I'd really like a chance to play it, but I don't think I'll be able to, short of somehow becoming smart enough to program my own runtime package for it. I did get to play some of NeverWinter Nights though, so far, I really love it.
You awaken to find yourself standing in what appears to be an open field. You have no memory of who you are or what you are doing here, though you get the feeling that something important is going on in the world that concerns you. The climate is warm, and the smells of a city waft on the winds from the south. Judging by the sounds, It is fairly close by. Pine woods surround you to the North, East, and West, with the West marked by a path.
"In Skyrates, we are experimenting with sporadic play. A good way to think of your interaction with the game is much like checking your email. A few minutes here and there, spread throughout your entire day."
